🎯 What Will We Learn Today?

Did you know that ½ and 2/4 represent the same amount? These are called equivalent fractions! Today we'll learn how to find and create equivalent fractions.

📚 What Are Equivalent Fractions?

Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different but represent the same value or the same amount.

Example: ½ = 2/4 = 4/8 = 8/16

All of these show exactly half!

🔍 How to Create Equivalent Fractions

Rule: Multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same number.

Multiplying (to get bigger numbers):
½ → multiply top and bottom by 2 → 2/4
½ → multiply top and bottom by 3 → 3/6
½ → multiply top and bottom by 5 → 5/10

Dividing (to simplify):
6/8 → divide top and bottom by 2 → 3/4
9/12 → divide top and bottom by 3 → 3/4

🍕 Visual Proof

Picture one pizza cut into 2 pieces (½) vs. 4 pieces (2/4):
  • ½ means 1 big piece

  • 2/4 means 2 smaller pieces

  • Both = half the pizza! 🍕

  • 📊 Equivalent Fraction Table (for ½)

    | × | Equivalent |
    |---|------------|
    | ×2 | 2/4 |
    | ×3 | 3/6 |
    | ×4 | 4/8 |
    | ×5 | 5/10 |

    💡 Simplifying Fractions

To simplify (reduce) a fraction, divide both numbers by the biggest number that goes into both evenly.

    6/8: both divisible by 2 → 3/4
    12/15: both divisible by 3 → 4/5
