🎯 What Will We Learn Today?

Shapes can make beautiful patterns and some shapes are perfectly balanced! Today we'll explore shape patterns and the magic of symmetry.

📚 What Are Shape Patterns?

A shape pattern repeats shapes in a predictable order. Once you find the core(the part that repeats), you can predict what comes next!

`
🔵🔴🔵🔴🔵🔴🔵🔴 → Core: 🔵🔴(repeating)
⭐🔺🔺⭐🔺🔺⭐🔺🔺 → Core: ⭐🔺🔺(repeating)
`

🔍 How to Find the Pattern

  • Look at the first few shapes

  • Find where they start repeating

  • That repeating part is the pattern core

  • Use the core to predict what comes next!

  • 🎮 What Comes Next?

    `
    🔺🔵🔺🔵🔺🔵🔺 ___ ___
    Answer: 🔵🔺(the pattern is 🔺🔵)

    🟡🟡🔴🟡🟡🔴🟡🟡 ___ ___
    Answer: 🔴🟡(the pattern is 🟡🟡🔴)

    📐 What Is Symmetry?

Symmetry means a shape looks exactly the same on both sides when you fold it along a line. The fold line is called the line of symmetry.

    Shapes with Symmetry:

  • Square: 4 lines of symmetry!

  • Rectangle: 2 lines of symmetry

  • Equilateral triangle: 3 lines of symmetry

  • Circle: Infinite lines of symmetry!

  • Heart: 1 line of symmetry(down the middle)

  • No Symmetry:

  • A scalene triangle(all sides different)

  • Most letters like F, G, J, L, P, Q, R

  • 🎨 Symmetry All Around Us

  • Butterfly wings — perfectly symmetrical

  • Human face — roughly symmetrical left and right

  • Leaves — many have a central line of symmetry

  • Buildings — architects love symmetry!

  • 📝 Practice Problems

  • What comes next? 🔴🔴🔵🔴🔴🔵🔴 ___ ___

  • Does a rectangle have lines of symmetry? How many?

  • Which letter has symmetry: A, F, or M?

  • Draw a shape that has NO symmetry.

  • Find three things in your room that show symmetry.
