Pi (π) is one of the most famous numbers in math! Today we'll learn what pi is, where it comes from, and why it's so special.

📚 What Is Pi?



Pi (π) is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. No matter how big or small a circle is, this ratio is always the same: about 3.14159...

The Greek letter π (pronounced "pie") is used to represent this number.

🔍 Why Is Pi Special?



Pi is an irrational number, which means its decimal goes on forever without repeating! Here are the first few digits:

π = 3.14159265358979323846...

For most math problems, we use 3.14 as an approximation.

📖 A Little History



People have known about pi for thousands of years! Ancient Babylonians and Egyptians used approximations of pi to build pyramids and structures. The Greek mathematician Archimedes was one of the first to calculate pi accurately.

🎮 The Pi Experiment



Try this at home:
  • Find 3 different-sized round objects (a cup, a plate, a coin)

  • For each one, measure the circumference (wrap a string) and the diameter

  • Divide circumference by diameter

  • All three answers should be close to 3.14!


  • 💡 Using Pi in Formulas



  • Circumference: C = 2πr or C = πd

  • Area of a circle: A = πr²


  • Example: Find the area of a circle with radius 5 cm.
  • A = π × 5² = 3.14 × 25 = 78.5 square cm


  • 📝 Practice Problems



  • What number does π represent? (approximately)

  • A circle has radius 3 cm. Find its circumference using π ≈ 3.14.

  • If C = πd and d = 10, what is C?
