🎯 What Will We Learn Today?

Have you ever shared a cake with friends? You were using fractions without even knowing it! Today we'll learn what fractions are, how to write them, and where they show up in everyday life.

📚 What Is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It's written with two numbers — a numerator on top and a denominator on the bottom:

  • Denominator (bottom): How many equal parts the whole is split into

  • Numerator (top): How many of those parts we're counting

  • 🎮 Fractions in Everyday Life

    Fractions are everywhere:
  • ¼ of a pizza (1 slice out of 4)

  • ½ of a cake (half of it)

  • A baseball batting average of 3/5 (3 hits in 5 at-bats)

  • A glass that's 1/3 full

  • ✏️ How to Write a Fraction

    `
    Numerator 1
    ---------- = ---
    Denominator 2
    `

This is read as "one half" — 1 part out of 2 equal parts.

    📐 Types of Fractions

  • Proper Fraction: Numerator < Denominator (e.g., 2/5)

  • Improper Fraction: Numerator ≥ Denominator (e.g., 7/4)

  • Mixed Number: A whole number plus a fraction (e.g., 1½)

  • 💡 Understanding Fractions Visually

  • Draw a circle and shade parts — like a pizza!

  • Fold paper into equal parts

  • Play fraction card games

  • 📝 Check Your Understanding

  • What is the denominator in 2/3?

  • You have 3 slices out of a 4-slice pizza. What fraction is that?

  • 8 out of 12 students like apples. What fraction is that?

  • Which is bigger: 1/2 or 2/4? What do you notice?
