🎯 What Will We Learn Today?
How much space does a shape cover? That's area! Today we'll learn what area means and how to calculate it for rectangles and squares.
📚 What Is Area?
Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape. It tells us how much surface a shape covers. We measure area in square units — like square centimeters (cm²) or square inches (in²).
Think of tiling a floor — the number of tiles you need depends on the area!
📐 Area Formulas
Rectangle
Area = Length × Width → A = L × W
Square
Since length = width for a square: A = side × side = s²
🎮 Let's Calculate!
Example 1: A rectangle is 7 cm long and 4 cm wide.
Example 2: A square has sides of 9 inches.
Example 3: A room is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide. How much carpet do you need?
🔍 Perimeter vs. Area
Don't confuse them!
| | Perimeter | Area |
|---|-----------|------|
| What? | Distance around | Space inside |
| Units | Regular (cm, in) | Square (cm², in²) |
| Formula (rect) | 2L + 2W | L × W |
