🎯 What Will We Learn Today?

What's a faster way to add the same number over and over? Multiplication! Today we'll learn what multiplication really means and how it makes math so much faster.

📚 What Is Multiplication?

Multiplication is repeated addition. Instead of adding 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, we can just say 4 × 3!

  • 4 × 3 means "4 groups of 3"

  • The × symbol is read as "times"

  • The answer is called the product

  • 🎮 Multiplication as Groups

Think of multiplication as groups of things:

    `

    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

    Or: 4 groups of 3 = 4 × 3 = 12
    `

    📐 Multiplication Is Commutative

    The order doesn't matter! 3 × 4 gives the same answer as 4 × 3:

  • 3 rows of 4 cookies = 12 cookies

  • 4 rows of 3 cookies = 12 cookies

  • 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 = 12

  • This is called the commutative property.

    📊 The Multiplication Table

    The multiplication table shows all multiplication facts from 1 × 1 to 10 × 10. Here's a small piece:

    | × | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
    |---|----|----|----|----|----|
    | 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
    | 2 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
    | 3 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 15 |
    | 4 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 16 | 20 |
    | 5 | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 |

    💡 Key Patterns to Know

  • × 1: Any number times 1 equals itself(5 × 1 = 5)

  • × 0: Any number times 0 equals 0(5 × 0 = 0)

  • × 2: Just double the number(7 × 2 = 14)

  • × 10: Just add a zero(7 × 10 = 70)

  • 📝 Practice Problems

  • Write 5 + 5 + 5 as a multiplication.

  • 3 × 4 = ?
