🎯 What Will We Learn Today?

How do you share 12 cookies equally among 4 friends? That's division! Today we'll learn what division means and how it helps us share things fairly.

📚 What Is Division?

Division is splitting into equal groups. It's the opposite of multiplication!

  • 12 ÷ 4 means "split 12 into 4 equal groups"

  • The ÷ symbol is read as "divided by"

  • The answer is called the quotient

  • Each group gets 3 — that's fair sharing!

📐 Two Ways to Think About Division

Way 1: How Many in Each Group?

You have 20 stickers and 5 envelopes. How many stickers per envelope?
    20 ÷ 5 = 4 — each envelope gets 4 stickers.

    Way 2: How Many Groups?

You have 20 stickers. Each card needs 5 stickers. How many cards can you make?
    20 ÷ 5 = 4 — you can make 4 cards.

🧮 Division and Multiplication Are Related

If you know multiplication, you know division!

  • 3 × 4 = 12 means 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4

  • 5 × 6 = 30 means 30 ÷ 6 = 5 and 30 ÷ 5 = 6

  • These are called fact families!

    💡 Important Division Facts

  • Any number divided by 1 equals itself(8 ÷ 1 = 8)

  • Any number divided by itself equals 1(8 ÷ 8 = 1)

  • You CANNOT divide by 0 — it's impossible!

  • 0 divided by any number equals 0(0 ÷ 5 = 0)

  • 📝 Practice Problems

  • Share 15 candies equally among 5 friends. How many each?

  • 24 ÷ 6 = ?

  • 18 apples, 3 bags. How many apples per bag?

  • If 4 × 7 = 28, what is 28 ÷ 7?

  • Why can't you divide by 0? Think about sharing cookies with 0 friends!
